From Daryaganj to Badarpur, residents of South Delhi’s Central Zone will find it easier to dispose of garbage from Thursday morning.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Wednesday launched an integrated system for collection and disposal of garbage in its Central Zone, with the remaining three Zones to follow later this year.

Under the new system, there will be door-to-door garbage collection and segregation at source by the civic body for the first time.

Flagging off the scheme, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the new mechanism was in continuation of the work under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

From household to landfill, the entire process of handing garbage will be carried out by Dakshin Dilli Swachh Initiatives Ltd., a special purpose vehicle set up by the SDMC and Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS).

The project was supposed to be launched in January, but got delayed as the National Green Tribunal stayed the registration of the new trucks. With the NGT giving its nod recently, the vehicles were registered. As per the SDMC, about 90 per cent of the vehicles are either electric or CNG-powered, reducing the air pollution impact.

Transfer stations

A hundred cycle-rickshaws, 48 electric rickshaws, 258 tippers and 18 silt-lifters will collect garbage from households and markets, and take it to fixed compactor transfer stations where the trash will be readied for the next stage.

After compacting in 32 mobile compactors and 15 fixed compactors, the garbage will be transported to the landfill. The project also envisages getting the informal waste sector involved in segregation at source. This scheme will give a boost to the SDMC’s infrastructure as it currently has only 257 auto-tippers operating in all four zones.

In a first for any municipality in Delhi, there will be segregation of waste across the Zone, with biodegradable, non-biodegradable, silt from street sweeping and construction and demolition being collected separately.

Speaking at the launch of the scheme in Okhla, SDMC Mayor Shyam Sharma said that the project would move South Delhi towards becoming a “Smart City”.

Leader of the House Subhash Arya said that the new system would be rolled out in the Najafgarh, South and West Zones as well.

He said the tendering process was on.
