Fresh trouble for Kanda

May face destruction of evidence charges too

August 23, 2012 10:15 am | Updated November 17, 2021 05:01 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A day after a Section of the Information Technology Act was slapped on former Haryana Minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, now in police custody on charges of abetting the suicide of his former employee Geetika Sharma, the police on Wednesday indicated they might slap a case of destruction of evidence against him.

“We will also charge him [Mr. Kanda] with destruction of evidence,” said Special Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Dharmendra Kumar talking to journalists at Police Headquarters here on Wednesday.

The fresh charge, if slapped, will be the latest addition to the others — abetment to suicide, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation along with the IT Act — that Mr. Kanda is already facing in the case.

It has been learnt that some of Mr. Kanda’s hard disks were missing during the searches conducted at his house and office in Gurgaon.

Actor/model Nupur Mehta, who was associated with an airline company and casino run by the MDLR group owned by Mr. Kanda between 2007 and 2010, may also be questioned in connection with the case, according to Mr. Kumar. Geetika too was associated with both MDLR ventures during the same period.

The police claimed they had gathered a lot of material which might be relevant to the case since Mr. Kanda’s arrest and is analysing the same with his help.

Mr. Kumar said the police are piecing together the evidence collected so far. He added that the police will seek to extend Mr. Kanda’s custody further when the remand ends on Saturday.

The role of MDLR employee Shivroop, who allegedly sent an e-mail to Geetika from a fake e-mail address threatening the former flight attendant with extradition from Dubai where she was working back then, is also being probed, Mr. Kumar added.

Both Mr. Kanda and his associate Aruna Chadha were named in Geetika’s suicide note, accusing both of having ruined her life and threatening her family members. Geetika hanged herself on August 5. Ms. Chadha was arrested on August 8 while Mr. Kanda, after evading arrest for days, surrendered on August 18.

On whether Ms. Chadha’s police custody will be sought again after a plea for the same was rejected by a Rohini court on Tuesday, Mr. Kumar said the police will do so if any new evidence comes up against her.
