Acknowledging a social project by Miss World Manushi Chhillar to create awareness on menstrual hygiene, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday announced to arrange for free supply of sanitary napkins to girls in State schools. He also appointed Ms. Chhillar as the brand ambassador of a programme to prevent anaemia among children in the State.

Shakti Project

He disclosed this while addressing a press conference along with Ms. Chhillar in Kurukshetra on Thursday. Miss World Organisation chairperson Julia Morley, was also present.

She thanked Ms. Morley for giving an opportunity to young girls like her and said this year the award for beauty with purpose had been given to India.

Extending support to the “Shakti Project” being carried out by Ms. Chhillar to spread awareness about menstrual hygiene among girls, the Chief Minister said that the state government would make free supply of sanitary napkins in all schools of the State to promote such projects. A sum of ₹18 crore would be spent on this scheme.

Congratulating Ms. Chhillar for her achievement which brought laurels to the State and the nation at the global level, Mr. Khattar said that it was a “matter of pride and happiness that our daughter, after becoming Miss World, had selected International Gita Mahotsav programme for her first visit to Haryana”.

Ms. Chhillar said Haryana had given her a lot. As a medical student of Khanpur Medial College, she wanted to do something for girls in Haryana. She lauded the efforts made and initiatives taken by Mr. Khattar and the government to improve the State’s sex ratio.

Asked whether she will pursue a career in the medical profession or in Bollywood, Ms. Chhillar, donning a white traditional attire and flaunting the Miss World Crown, said five Indian women had won the Miss World Crown, but only two had opted to become actors. It was not necessary to move towards the world of glamour, she added.
