Four young men of a family were killed and one seriously injured when their car rammed a divider and overturned at South Extension here in the early hours of Sunday. The injured has been admitted to AIIMS.

The accident took place around 12:15 a.m. when Sarabjit Singh (24) and his cousins Gurlin (24) and Amarjit (30) were on their way to drop their relative Taranjit (26) and his friend Akhilesh Sharma at the Inter-State Bus Terminus in Kashmere Gate.

While passing through South Extension, the driver took a right turn near Ansal Plaza and was negotiating a left turn when he allegedly lost control over the car. The vehicle swerved and rammed the road divider, hit an electric pole and landed on its roof. The car was dragged some distance before it came to a halt.

A passer-by informed the Police Control Room, following which the local police reached the accident site. They pulled out the victims from the vehicle and rushed them to the JPNA Trauma Centre at AIIMS where Sarabjit, Gurlin, Amarjit and Taranjit were declared dead. Akhilesh, who had sustained serious injuries, was shifted to the ICU. “He has suffered multiple fractures and is in a serious condition,” said an Institute doctor.

The parents of the victims were informed and the bodies handed over to them after post-mortem. “The parents of the victims live in and around Gautam Nagar, which is not far from the accident site. They immediately rushed to the hospital on hearing about the accident. The victims were involved in the family business,” said a police officer, adding that investigations were under way to ascertain the sequence of events leading up to the accident.

“We are waiting to record Akhilesh's statement that would help us reconstruct the chain of events. His parents, who live in Ludhiana, have been informed. Taranjit was also from Ludhiana,” he added.

The police are yet to establish who was driving the car, which belongs to Sarabjit's father. The vehicle has been impounded.
