The 13-year-old gang-rape victim, who had attempted suicide at her residence in Farsh Bazar here on Saturday, is stated to be in a stable condition. She is under treatment at Hedgewar Hospital.

While three of the eight accused were arrested earlier, the police nabbed four of the five other accused persons as well after the incident was widely reported in the media. The victim was kidnapped along with her brother from Farsh Bazar on March 15. They were taken to a house in Loni where eight persons allegedly raped her. After the victim’s brother was released, her mother alleged that the police did not seriously follow the leads provided by him.

The girl managed to escape from the custody of the rapists from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh and reached home on March 24. “We went to the police station along with her, but they discouraged us from pursuing the case further and also told us to get her married,” alleged her mother.

According to the family, the girl called up the Police Control Room on Friday and sought details of the action taken in her case. The following day she allegedly consumed sleeping pills.

“We faced difficulty in the hospital in getting her admitted to the ICU. But there was no arrangement for any psychologist at the hospital to counsel her. However, a clinical psychologist was sent on Sunday to check on her,” said a person assisting the victim’s family, adding that the Farsh Bazar SHO also visited the victim on Sunday.
