Four key road infrastructure projects got the final nod from the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Centre on Wednesday. At a meeting chaired by Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung, the completion of Rao Tula Ram flyover, adjusting the width of the Vikaspuri-Mukarba Chowk link, the Kidwai Nagar loop and the new link from East Kidwai Nagar to Thyagaraja Stadium received sanction. Work is expected to start after the monsoons and take at least two years to complete.

Completion of Rao Tula Ram flyover Sanction for the parallel flyover to complete the flyover on Rao Tula Ram Marg over Outer Ring Road has been cleared. Half the flyover was erected in 2010 and the pendency has created traffic snarls.

The underpass on Benito Juarez Marg has been held up for now. “It was decided that more consultation was needed by the working group on this underpass at Moti Bagh. The discussions would conclude before the next governing body meeting,” a Public Works Department source said.

Saving trees on the Vikas Puristretch The width of the road has been cut from 13 to 12 m in order to comply with the National Green Tribunal’s directives on June 18. A total of 1,476 trees had to be cut on the three-phase road project, of which 800 have already been felled. The NGT had pulled up the PWD and the Forest Department for felling trees in contempt of court. Reducing the road’s width saves trees. In addition to this, green belts and footpaths have been realigned to fell fewer trees.

“Bus stops will be retained at their original location and the location of bus bays in the original plan has been realigned to match with old bus stop locations so that public is not inconvenienced,” an official who attended the meeting told The Hindu .

Barapullah Phase II The elevated loop at the flyover near the All India Institute of Medical Sciences will cut travel time from the airport and decongest Moolchand and Ashram.

Under Barapullah Phase II, it will start from Safdarjung Hospital side and end on Barapullah Road going over Aurobindo Marg. Currently, commuters from Dhaula Kuan need to go through Sarojini Nagar to go towards the Inter-State Bus Terminus.

A new link parallel to the Barapullah drain has also been sanctioned from East Kidwai Nagar to Thyagaraja Stadium.

U-turn on Mathura Road A U-turn to cut travel time from Kilokri village to New Friends Colony (NFC) has also been approved on Mathura Road. No decision was taken on the 600-m long underpass at Ashram Chowk to reduce congestion between Bhogal and NFC.
