The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) has said that the university administration has fined office-bearers of the students’ body, Students’ Federation of India (SFI) member G. Suresh, and Bhagat Singh Ambedkar Students’ Organisation (BASO) member Umar Khalid for seeking justice for Najeeb.

₹20,000 fine each

“JNUSU members and two other students have been fined ₹20,000 each and issued immediate hostel transfer,” said Satarupa Chakraborty of the JNUSU.

‘Assaulters roaming free’

In a statement, the JNUSU added, “While Najeeb’s assaulters were ‘rewarded’ with just hostel transfers and allowed to roam around on the campus freely, besides continuing to threaten those who witnessed assaults on Najeeb, the administration preferred to take actions of hostel transfer with immediate effect and imposed huge fine on those who have been seeking justice for him.”

“Our academic process has been blocked until we pay the amount,” Ms. Chakraborty added.
