Four persons have been arrested by the Gurugram Police for allegedly stealing laptops and other valuables from cars parked in market areas after breaking their windows with catapults.
The police claim to have solved 49 cases of laptop thefts registered in different police stations across the Millennium City following their arrest. They also claim to have recovered an iPad and two hard disks.
Busy market places
Amar, Vishal, Pawan Naidu and Anil, all residents of Madangir in Delhi, were mostly active in market areas on Golf Course Road, Mehrauli-Gurugram Road, Sector 29, DLF areas and near Guru Dronacharya metro station. They would target cars parked on roads near busy market places.
“They mostly stole laptops kept inside cars. Though the accused belonged to Delhi, they came to Gurugram to commit these thefts because of the large number of IT professionals in the city. They mostly committed thefts from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.,” said the East District Crime Branch in-charge, Sub Inspector Manoj Kumar.
The police were investigating the recent theft of a laptop from inside a car in Sector 49 when they received a tip-off and a team arrested Amar and Vishal on August 8.
The duo was sent to police remand for six days and allegedly disclosed the names of their accomplices during interrogation. Pawan and Anil were arrested later.
The gang allegedly sold the stolen laptops to a contact in Delhi at throwaway prices.
On the run
“The man who bought the stolen laptops from them is absconding. We hope to make more recoveries after he is arrested. Also, the fifth accomplice of the thieves is on the run,” added Mr. Kumar.
Incidents of laptop thefts from cars were on the rise in Gurugram over the past few months.
“At least three to four cases of laptop thefts were reported every day earlier. But the number of thefts has gone down since the arrest,” said Mr. Kumar.
