The Delhi BJP mourned the death of senior leader and former Speaker of the Delhi Assembly Charti Lal Goel, who passed away on Tuesday.

BJP national president Amit Shah, Union Ministers Arun Jaitley and M. Venkaiah Naidu as well as senior leader Shahnawaz Hussain were present at the cremation at the Nigambodh Ghat.

His cremation was performed by his son and Union Minister Vijay Goel.

Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Nivas Goel paid tributes to the late leader on behalf of the Delhi government at his residence later.

Paying his condolences, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay said Mr. Goel was a “pious soul and an institution in himself”.

“He worked at several levels in the party and government and contributed immensely to Delhi’s cultural and trade growth along with contributing in development of dedicated party cadre and was an active leader in Delhi since the Jan Sangh era,” Mr. Upadhyay said.

His tenures as Deputy Mayor of Delhi and Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, the party said, spoke volumes of his statesmanship.
