A one-day workshop on the scope of para-medical courses in community colleges at Manesar, Haryana, was recently organised by the community college unit of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Haryana-IGNOU Society for Community Education and Training.

‘Landmark initiative'

IGNOU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. V N Rajeshekharan Pillai said: “The community college scheme is a landmark initiative of IGNOU which has been able to take the university to different corners of the country. The flexibility inbuilt in the scheme has been able to provide up-skilling in different trades. The Community Colleges with the Indian Army, Air Force & Navy had in two year's time a total enrolment of about 4.3 lakh students with more than 70 per cent of the students employed,” he added.

IGNOU, Community College Unit, Nodal Officer, Dr. C K Ghosh, and the Haryana-IGNOU Community College Principal Mr. Ravin Ahuja said that the workshop had generated interest among the participants and that the two panel discussions gave directions about the policy and the implementation strategies of handling the para-medical programmes.

According to IGNOU, programmes in the area of para-medical sciences have been successful among community colleges, especially in Haryana
