The traffic coming from the direction of Jaipur is now allowed to take the flyover at the Hero Honda Chowk on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. The flyover was partially opened to the traffic on Monday in a major relief to the commuters. The entire flyover is expected to be thrown open to the public before June 30.
The 1.4-km-long flyover is being constructed as part of a three-layer crossing — flyover, underpass and existing road — at Hero Honda Chowk. Work on the project had started on November 25, 2014 with the contract stipulating a period of 30 months for completion, which ends on May 25, 2017.
Encroachment delay
“The left hand side (Delhi-Jaipur) of the flyover with the service road has been completed and is open to the traffic. But the traffic coming from Jaipur has been diverted till the time the right hand side (Jaipur-Delhi) is also completed,” said National Highways Authority of India Project Director Ashok Sharma. The work on the other side has been delayed as the Haryana Urban Development Authority is yet to remove encroachment by Sugandha Restaurant and a wine shop. Out of the total 32 piers, 29 piers have been completed upto the pier cap level. “The work on construction of the underpass is also on the fast track.
Daily detour
The cumulative progress of the project is over 70 % and an expenditure of ₹119 crore has been incurred so far,” said Mr. Sharma.
The locals had been demanding the construction of a flyover at Hero Honda Chowk on National Highway-8 for long as those residing in Sectors 9, 9A, 10, 10A, 37D, 37C and Naharpur, Kherki, Narsingpur and Khatola villages were forced to take a detour of several kilometres every day to travel through it.
One of the important junctions on the National Highway-8, Hero Honda Chowk also witnesses several fatal accidents every year with no foot over-bridge for the pedestrians.
Massive waterlogging
Besides, the Hero Honda Chowk witnesses massive water-logging every year during monsoon leading to long traffic snarls.
The Chowk had witnessed one of its worst traffic jams last July with vehicles being caught in the traffic for over 24 hours. The authorities are trying hard to finish the project before the monsoon this year to avoid more traffic jams.
