Another girl sustains serious injuries; driver booked for rash driving

A five-year-old girl was killed and another sustained serious injuries when a school van carrying them jumped the traffic signal at Dhaula Kuan here on Tuesday, hit a car and overturned.

The Maruti van ferrying over half-a-dozen students was coming from the direction of Gurgaon around 1-30 p.m. when it jumped the traffic signal at T-point near Dhaula Kuan metro station and rammed a Swift car. The van turned on its side after hitting the car causing injuries to the students. Some passers-by and the traffic policemen at the signal pulled out the injured students and the driver, later identified as Sumit. The injured students were taken to Safdarjang Hospital in a Police Control Room van where Gauri, an Upper KG student of Air Force School, was declared brought dead. Another girl, Kanika Goel, has been diagnosed with serious injuries. Kanika is a resident of Uttam Nagar.

Delhi Police Constable Braham Prakash, an eye-witness, said: “I was managing traffic at the T-point when the van carrying school students came at a high speed and jumped the traffic signal and hit the Swift car. Such was the impact of the accident that the van turned on its side and its windscreen and window glasses were shattered. One of the girls in the van was seriously injured and was bleeding profusely. She had sustained head injuries. The driver was arrested at the spot.”

Gauri was a resident of Hari Nagar.

Sumit, a resident of jhuggi-jhonpri cluster in Uttam Nagar, has been booked for causing death to rash and negligent driving.
