At least five policemen, including a commanding officer, were injured when a mob indulged in heavy brick-batting over a petty issue in Rajpura here.

An argument erupted between the occupants of a truck and a bullock cart over giving way near Kamalpur village. The situation worsened and both the sides came to blows with each other, ASP Ram Surat Yadav said.

Later, the truck carrying pilgrims returning from Ajmer was driven to Chaudhary Sarai in Sambhal Kotwali and the driver parked it in front of the police chowki in protest against the incident. More pilgrims reached the spot, the ASP said.

Police teams from other parts of the district were rushed to the scene to pacify the protesters who started brick-batting and damaged a bus, he said.

Five police men, including Circle officer (City) Abbas Zaidi, were injured in the incident. The police resorted to mild use of force and lobbed teargas shells to control the mob.

SP Balendu Bhushan said Public Armed Constabulary personnel has been deployed in the area and a strict vigil is being kept. - PTI
