Unidentified car-borne miscreants allegedly fired in the air outside a house in Vasant Vihar area of South West Delhi on Sunday. Israeli embassy staff have been residing in the house.

The incident took place opposite Delhi Public School on Vasant Marg, at around 1-45 a.m., a senior Delhi Police officer said.

While no Israeli national or any other person was injured in the firing, the Delhi Police are investigating the matter, officials from the Israeli Embassy said.

“The incident was reported late in the night. Since diplomats from several countries, including Israel, live in the area, the case is being probed by the Delhi Police. All Israeli nationals are safe. The Israeli embassy is in touch with the police,” spokesperson of Israel embassy, Mr. Ohad, told reporters outside the house where the incident occurred.

Police officers said a case has been registered at Vasant Vihar police station and further investigation is on. Apart from the local police, Delhi Police Special Cell staff also visited the crime scene. Officials said they have recovered a cartridge shell from the spot.

“A school guard said that somebody from a car fired in the air and sped off. The spent cartridge that was recovered from the spot is made of plastic. The bullet is likely to have been fired from a starter pistol that is used to signal the start of a sport event. The matter is being probed,” a senior police officer said. However, the cops said since the matter is related to Israel, they are probing all possible angles.

While the investigators remained tight-lipped about any breakthrough, sources said the footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the buildings, including that of Embassy of Paraguay, next to the crime scene would also be scanned for leads.

“CCTVs are installed in the nearby buildings. Their footage would be scanned. But it is difficult to say if anything conclusive would emerge as the incident occurred during night,” a police officer said.

Earlier in February 2012, wife of an Israeli diplomat was injured when an explosive device went off in the car she was travelling in.
