Around 180 huts were gutted in a massive fire which broke out in a slum cluster in East Delhi’s Ghazipur on Tuesday evening. No deaths or injuries were reported.

According to the fire department, they received a call at 5-30 p.m. about a fire in a slum cluster located near Ghazipur Dairy Farm. The cluster has close to 800 huts and is mainly inhabited by rag-pickers working at Ghazipur dump yard.

“Many occupants were at home when the fire broke out but they spotted the fire early and evacuated their hutments preventing any loss of human lives. By the time the fire tenders reached the spot the fire had spread to over 100 dwellings. Twenty-seven fire tenders brought the situation under control in two hours,” said a police officer.

The police is trying to ascertain the cause of the fire. In 2010, a fire broke out in the same slum cluster in which 800 huts were burnt.
