Financial woes: Mayors to meet CM today

March 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Mayors of the three BJP-led municipal corporations of Delhi will meet Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to discuss, among other things, the precarious financial position of the North and South civic bodies.

North Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Yogender Chandolia said on Friday that this would be the first meeting of the municipal leadership with the Aam Aadmi Party Government.

“On one hand, the North and East corporations have been unable to pay salaries on time and on the other, the Delhi Government has not been giving us our rightful share of taxes and grants. We will raise the demand with the CM,” said Mr. Chandolia.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has been plagued by huge deficits since its formation in 2012. EDMC Mayor Meenakshi had said last month that Mr. Kejriwal had not responded to numerous calls for a meeting to discuss the issue.

The corporations claim that the Delhi Government has been adjusting their share of taxes against outstanding loan repayments, and that the amount due for education has been reduced.
