A 50-year-old woman was killed in a scuffle between two families over bursting of crackers at Samaipur Badli in Outer Delhi. About 10 people from the families were injured.
According to the police, the incident was reported around 10 p.m. on Thursday when locals made a call to the Police Control Room about an ongoing fight between the two groups.
The police managed to pacify the crowd which by then had resorted to pelting stones at each other.
“About 10 people from both groups had received injuries out of which at least six were grievously injured. Two PCR vans took the injured to a hospital. One woman, later identified as Sunita Devi, succumbed to injuries at the hospital,” said a senior police officer.
Minor argumentDuring subsequent investigation, the police found that a minor argument over bursting crackers snowballed into a major confrontation.
A case of murder has been filed against the accused, but no arrest has been made so far.
“Both the families have been neighbours for quite some time now. Around 4-5 months ago, they had fought over some trivial issue and the police had then intervened. What happened on Diwali was much more serious than their previous fights,” the officer said .
Investigators found that around 9:30 p.m., children from both families were bursting crackers on the street.
“An argument between the children resulted in exchange of blows. One of the kids then went home and told his family that he had been hit. In the meantime, the family members from the other group had come out of their home and a major fight ensued,” he said .
According to the police, the groups first exchanged blows and then threw bricks and stones at each other. “The woman had not suffered any major external injuries. The death might have been caused by injuries to the internal organs,” the official added .
