The Democratic Students’ Federation has welcomed the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court in the Shayara Bano vs. Union of India and others case in which the practice of talaq-e-biddat — triple talaq — was set aside. They, however, added that the fight for gender justice must go on, and intensify in all spheres of personal and civil laws as well as social life.
The student organisation said, “ Talaq-e-biddat or the practice of instantaneous pronouncement of triple talaq has been finding new manifestations in recent times through unilateral pronouncements of divorce by men through SMS, email, WhatsApp messages, over phone, Facebook, speed post, etc., with no recourse to remedy available to aggrieved women”.
‘Sangh Parivar agenda’
In a statement, the organisation said that it hailed the efforts of petitioners — Shayara Bano, Aafreen Rahman, Gulshan Parveen, Ishrat Jahan and Atiya Sabri — along with organisations like the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, other organisations of Muslim women and the entire women’s movement for this significant gain towards ensuring more gender-just laws.
The student organisation, however, warned that the ABVP and other Sangh Parivar outfits are pursuing their own agenda of Uniform Civil Code while being hypocritically silent on gender discriminatory practices within all religious communities except Muslims.
