Delhi Police have seized Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) of the face value of Rs. 11 lakh from a gang that used to smuggle the notes from Bangkok by concealing them in cosmetics and crockery containers. Two women, identified as Rekha (40) and Sheetal Singh (36), who were part of the gang, have been arrested . The duo was arrested on Thursday at the New Delhi railway station as soon as they alighted from Duronto Express coming from Kolkatta

“The women have revealed that they were acting as courier agents to some Pakistan nationals based in Bangkok. Although they were based in Delhi, they used to frequently travel to Thailand via Kolkatta. Rekha is the mastermind of the gang. She has been into this illegal trade for the past couple of years, while Sheetal joined her recently ,” said Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Ravindra Yadav.

The arrest came after the police received information about FICN being smuggled into India from a new route via Bangkok.

“During search, it was discovered that they had concealed the FICN carefully in talcum powder containers. The concealment was done in such a manner that it skipped the vigilance at the airport,” said Mr. Yadav.

The accused had prepared small rolls of FICN and carefully packed those with tissue paper and cello tape. The same were concealed after emptying talcum powder containers and then refilling the remaining portion with talcum powder, he said.

“During interrogation, Rekha disclosed that she had procured the FICN from one Raja and Amjad, who are of Pakistani origin and are based in a famous market of Bangkok. The consignment was to be handed over to a contact in Turkman Gate.” Mr. Yadav added.
