A 17-year-old girl, student of Class XII at a government school, allegedly committed suicide at her one-room rented accommodation in Rohini’s Bakhtawarpur village on Friday. In her suicide note, the girl mentioned the harassment being faced by her and her family.

Maine koi galti nahi ki hai… Idhar jao to ladke, udhar jao to ladke… meri zindagi kharab kar rahe hain sab taaki main kuch na kar sakun (I haven’t committed any mistake… There are boys wherever I go… They want to destroy my life so I can’t accomplish anything)”, she wrote in a single-page note found on the bed.

“I am repeating that I have not committed any mistake. People of Delhi are not letting me live,” she added.

The deceased, who was due to take her last board exam on April 2, was found hanging from the ceiling fan around 9 a.m. by her 55-year-old father, a vegetable vendor. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors referred her to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital. She could not be revived.

The girl’s family alleged that she was being harassed by a 20-year-old man in the neighbourhood for the last 10 days and they had gone to the man’s family requesting him to leave her alone.

“My daughter used to go running every morning. Around 10 days ago, she told us that a man has been following her and forcing her to be friends with him. He also tried to touch her inappropriately,” said the father.

‘Appealed to man’s family’

The father alleged that he and his wife had gone to the man’s house around six days ago to request the family to make their son understand.

The man’s family, however, allegedly called the girl a “prostitute” and asked the couple to leave.

“The man still didn’t stop. We went to meet his family again on Wednesday but they abused us and threw us out of their house,” said the father.

Hum chup rahe kyunki ladki ka maamla tha, badnaami hoti. Kaash police ko usi din bata diya hota (We kept quiet because it was our daughter’s matter, it might have brought dishonour. I wish we had approached the police),” he added.

The same day, the father was allegedly told by his landlord to leave the house. The landlord allegedly told him that the episode with the man and his family “brought bad name to the area”.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said that they have registered a case under Section 306 (Abetment of suicide) of the IPC and Section 12 of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

“The man has been identified as 20-year-old Mayank. He is absconding and efforts are being made to arrest him,” said Mr. Gupta.

The family claimed that before the girl allegedly hanged herself, she washed all the clothes, cleaned the dishes and took a shower. The TV’s volume was turned up high when the father entered the home and found his daughter hanging. The note was kept on the bed.

“I have done all the work. Now you won’t have to leave the house because of me,” she had written in the suicide note.
