Extortion bid outside hospital foiled, suspect flees

April 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A man opened fire at a hospital in outer Delhi’s Bawana in what the police said was an unsuccessful extortion bid on Monday evening.

Before opening fire, the man had gone inside the hospital and demanded Rs. 20 lakh to be paid as protection money from an attendant who had accompanied a patient.

A case has been filed based on the statement of a teenager, whose grandfather was admitted at the Sant Soham Hospital. The teenager told the police that the incident took place when he was waiting at the reception area.

“The accused went inside the hospital at around 7:20 pm and told the boy to inform the doctor to make a payment of ‘20 peti’ as protection money. The man also threatened of dire consequences if the money was not paid,” the officer added.

Then he whipped out a pistol and opened fire pointing towards the reception area. This led to a stampede-like situation in the hospital, but nobody was injured. The attacker was seen fleeing on a motorcycle on which his accomplice was waiting near the hospital.
