Expert panel may take over shelter homes

The Delhi government may hand over management of Asha Kiran Homes, where deaths of 11 inmates were recently reported, to an expert panel. The move comes after the Chief Secretary pointed out “administrative lapses” at the shelter.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has directed the Delhi government’s Social Welfare Department to prepare a note on roping in an expert panel to run Asha Kiran homes for mentally challenged children and women.

Earlier this month, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had ordered Chief Secretary M. M. Kutty to submit a report on the shelter after the death of 11 inmates was reported.

Sources said the Deputy CM wanted that the expert panel be headed by a psychiatrist.
