For the second time in two months, former Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Khan has been attacked.
Mr. Khan was allegedly shot at by two bike-borne men on Monday night outside his residence in south-east Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj.
The police have registered a case and are trying to identify the culprits.
Friend’s widow
In June, Mr. Khan was shot at outside his friend’s house in Zakir Nagar where he had gone to help his friend’s widow, who was allegedly being forced to vacate her house.
A man called Mohd Nasir was arrested in the case.
In the latest incident, Mr. Khan said that he had stepped outside his house around 11 p.m on Monday to feed his dogs. “When I bent down to feed them, I heard three gunshots. When I looked up, I saw two men (wearing helmets) on a bike outside my house. They immediately fled when I tried to step out of the garden,” he said.
‘Didn’t believe me’
Mr. Khan then called the police. The former MLA alleged that at first the police didn’t believe him and then tried to dissuade him.
“They told me I had probably mistaken the sound of siren with gun shots as people put such sirens in their bikes. I told them I am sure it was a gun shot. Eventually, when the place was investigated, they found two empty cartridges outside my house. That’s when they believed me,” Mr. Khan said, adding that he wasn’t sure whether he was the target.
No witnesses
He, however, added that there were no other houses in the vicinity.
Based on his complaint and preliminary investigation, the police have registered a case.
“The empty cartridges were found on the main road. There are no other eye-witnesses and no one has been injured. We have registered a case under Sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC and Section 25 of the Arms Act,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Romil Baaniya.
