Centre of Science and Environment director-general Sunita Narain was injured in a road accident while cycling near the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Sunday morning.
According to Ms. Narain’s colleague at CSE, Anumita Roychowdhury, her bicycle was hit by a speeding car in the early hours of Sunday while the noted environmentalist was going to Lodhi Garden from her house in Green Park.
“As she reached near the AIIMS flyover, a speeding car rammed her cycle from behind. Due to the impact, she fell and her face hit the ground. She began bleeding profusely from her nose. The car driver did not stop,” said Ms. Roychowdhury.
However, minutes after the accident, occupants of another car, which was passing by, spotted an injured Ms. Narain and rushed her to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where she is reported to be out of danger.
Ms. Roychowdhury said Ms. Narain, who is also the publisher of Down To Earth magazine, sustained fractures in both her ribs and also injuries on her face. There were, however, no internal injuries.
Stable and recovering
Talking to The Hindu , AIIMS Director Dr. M.C. Misra, said: “She had facial injuries and orthopaedic injuries to the hand. She is stable and is recovering”.
The police who have registered a case in connection with the matter at the Hauz Khas police station said on Sunday that since there was no one around when the accident took place, the number of the errant vehicle could not be noted and they were waiting for Ms. Narain’s health to recover to record her statement.
It is, however, not known if the police are trying to identify the erring vehicle with the help of cameras installed around AIIMS and on nearby roads.
