Over the last year, the Delhi government has been highlighting the changes and measures it has taken to reform the education sector in the city.
Education Minister Manish Sisodia had taken up the mandate for major reforms after the government significantly increased the investment in the sector by more than doubling the expenditure from ₹4,799 crore in 2011-12 to ₹10,690 crore in the 2016-17 budget.
‘Most priority’
It was the “most priority” sector as it got 23% share of allocation in 2016-17. The survey informed that the education expenditure to the Gross State Domestic Product of Delhi was the highest at 1.72% in 2015-16.
Showcasing results, the government said in its Economic Survey that 54 schools have been taken up on pilot basis to be developed as Model Schools. It also highlighted that the number of students in technical institutes in Delhi has increased from 27,622 in 2014-15 to 32,250 in 2015-16.
The survey also revealed that literacy rate of Delhi is around 86% — much higher than the all India level of 74% as per the 2011 Census. In Delhi, the male literacy rate was 90.9% and female literacy rate was 80.8%.
More schools
The number of schools also increased from 5,073 in 2010-11 to 5,796 in 2015-16. The number of students enrolled in schools increased from 39.21 lakh in 2010-11 to 44.30 lakh in 2015-16.
The per student per annum expenditure increased from ₹29,641 in 2012-13 to ₹44,640 in 2015-16.
The student-teacher ratio reached 30:1 in 2015-16.
The survey also showed that there are 1,222 government and government-aided schools in Delhi, which is 21% of the total schools running in the city. The schools account for 37.86% of total enrolment in Delhi.
