DUSU elections slated for Sept 11

August 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 01:26 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Delhi University on Wednesday announced September 11 as the date for the election of office bearers of Delhi University’s Student Union (DUSU) and members of the Central Council. The DUSU elections are one of the most important student polls in the country and are keenly watched by all national parties.

The date and venue for counting of votes will be announced later.

A statement from DU Registrar Tarun Das said: “The nomination papers for the office bearers of DUSU are to be submitted to the Office of the Chief Election Officer, DUSU elections 2015-16, latest by September 2.”

“Nomination papers for the membership of the Central Council are to be obtained from the concerned colleges/departments or institutions, and are also to be submitted by the same date. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on the same day, following which the list of duly nominated candidates will be published,” the statement said.

The date for withdrawing nominations has been fixed as September 4.

Last week, the varsity had appointed a team of officials that includes the Chief Election Officer, Chief Returning Officer and Returning Officer for facilitating the elections.

DUSU is a representative body of the students from most colleges and faculties. Apart from DUSU, which is an umbrella council, each college has its own students’ union.

Last year, the DUSU polls were swept by BJP-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). This year has in store a triangular contest with AAP’s youth wing Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) making its debut.
