Members of the Delhi University Students’ Union, which is controlled by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, were allegedly injured in a clash with the police when they were marching to the Vice-Chancellor’s office during a “ DU Bachao rally” on Friday afternoon.
The student activists had gathered at DU’s Art Faculty to demand better hostel facilities, special buses, special chance provision for exams and the opening of new colleges, among others things.
“Nine students, including two DUSU office-bearers, were severely injured and dozens others injured in police lathi-charge outside the V-C office Gate No. 1. DUSU vice-president Parvesh Malik and joint secretary Ashutosh Mathur are among the severely injured. Eight of them were admitted in Hindu Rao Hospital and one at the University’s health centre. Some students, including the DUSU president, were detained by the police,” said ABVP Delhi State Secretary Saket Bahuguna.
The police, however, denied resorting to lathi-charge. “There were around 700-800 students and they were marching to the Vice-Chancellor’s office. We did not use lathi to disperse them. We had to, however, use water cannons,” a senior police officer said.
“None of the students were detained after the protest,” he added.
