A 21-year-old Delhi University student was shot dead and his father grievously injured in a brawl with another family in South Patel Nagar here on Thursday night. One of the accused, a woman, has been arrested.

According to the First Information Report, Manish and his brother Sushil (26) had gone out for a routine stroll in the area after dinner on Thursday when they were allegedly accosted by Sanjay Jaat and his brother Rahul Chaudhary outside their house. An argument broke out, following which Sanjay and Rahul allegedly pushed them inside their car and beat them up.

Badly bruised, Manish and Sushil returned home and told their father Rajbir Singh (45), a handicrafts businessman, about the incident. At this Rajbir along with his two sons and relatives Deepak, Bunty and Sandeep reached Sanjay’s house and a fight broke out between the two parties.

Sanjay and Rahul allegedly attacked them with swords, injuring Rajbir, his son and relatives. Soon, Sanjay’s mother Saroj also joined in and let loose her dog at them. She allegedly directed Sanjay to shoot them, at which the latter opened fire at Manish, who died on the spot. He was a student of Moti Lal Nehru College.

Rajbir, who sustained serious cut wounds, was admitted to B. L. Kapoor Hospital along with Sushil, Sandeep and Bunty, who escaped with minor injuries.

Sanjay, who has four criminal cases registered against him, later got himself admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital with a minor bullet injury, which he claims to have been caused by the rival party. “The wound is not deep and the bullet just grazed his arm. He is in the hospital and will be arrested on being discharged. We have deployed policemen at the hospital,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Central) Devesh Srivastva.

Sanjay’s mother Saroj has been arrested, while Rahul is still at large. Saroj and Rahul also have previous involvements.

The family and relatives of the victims staged a protest in the area and blocked traffic for several hours demanding strict action against the accused.
