Delhi University’s savvy new website lacks only one thing – information. Students or parents are forced to visit each college’s website or go physically to each college to enquire about things like admissions under sports quota and extra co-curricular activity (ECA) quota as well as hostel accommodation. Adding to this confusion is that, as usual, the sports trial dates in many colleges are clashing with each other.
“I am from Rohtak and I panicked when I could not get enough information on the net. So I came to North Campus to get some information about the sports forms and then after that I had to make a second trip to know the dates from each college,” said Sahil, who got lost during the first trip and made the second trip on Friday.
Anoop, another student who was in the North Campus on Friday, said he had State certificates in hockey but many of the colleges he wanted did not have a hockey team. “When I was initially looking for sports forms, I first went to the university website, then I had a really busy time going individually to at least 20 colleges to find out who had hockey teams and then some college websites did not even have the basic information that I was looking for. I then came physically to the university but everyone here told me I have to go to each college and enquire, and now it is the same story for the dates of the trials. I will be taking the trials for chess and swimming also, so I had to enquire about these too,” he said, adding that it was the third trip he had to make.
There were many students and their parents who were worried about the clashing dates of sports trials as well.
“My son was the basketball captain in his school team and has also played for the State. He is sure to get into whichever college he wants to. The problem is that the top colleges all have clashing dates and we have to make a choice,” said Ms. Chawla. She accompanied her son to a North Campus college for a fitness test, along with a picnic basket.
Shri Ram College of Commerce and Hans Raj College have their basketball trials on the same day; both teams are considered to be good. These two colleges also have clashing dates for badminton trials. Similarly, two of the best cricket teams in the university, St. Stephen’s and Hans Raj, have clashing trial dates.
Some admission-seekers are good at two sports and this can also be a dilemma.
