In what may come as a big relief to students from the North-East and others who have no connection to the Hindi heartland, Delhi University might do away with the “Hindi or Mixture of Indian Languages” subject which was so far intended as compulsory for two years in the four-year under-graduate course starting June.
“We are still in the process of working this out, things will be clearer by the middle of next week,” said a university official, who did not want to come on record since the issue has not been finalised yet.
Students from the North-East have been protesting for a while against what they say is a “discriminatory” imposition of Hindi as “Mixture of Indian Languages” was not even an option for them, with very few colleges offering any of the languages that they might have studied in their region.
The students under the banner of “North-East Forum for International Solidarity” protested outside the Ministry of Human Resource Development on Friday and had earlier broken the gates at the Dean Students’ Welfare office on Monday to register their protest.
