As Delhi University re-opens on Monday after the violence at Ramjas College on February 22, the climate on campus will be far from normal.
Over the weekend, social media has been abuzz with activity condemning the violence outside Ramjas College with politically-affiliated students blaming the other side for what happened. #FightBackDU, #RamjasCollege and #ISupportABVP were all trending on social media.
Scheduled events and college were cancelled not only in DU but also at Ambedkar University fearing a repeat of what happened at Ramjas college.
The ABVP-led Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) will take out a ‘Tiranga March’ from Ramjas college at 12 p.m on Monday.
The call has been given for students of DU to stand with nationalism and march for the sake of the nation.
On Tuesday, a march has been called under the ‘Fight Back DU’ campaign from Khalsa College to Arts Faculty against “ gundagardi ”.
Students belonging to various debating, theatre and literary societies across the university have lent their support to the organisers of the seminar “Cultures of Protest” that was organised by Ramjas College. Many students said that the clash in Ramjas College is being portrayed as a clash between right-wing and left-wing groups and therefore the march on Tuesday will be in support of “creating a violence-free campus”.
‘No Right or Left’
A page on Facebook “Fight Back DU” has posted “there is no Left and Right here. There is no ‘sanghi’ and ‘communist’. There is either law and order or gundagardi ”.
Saket Bahuguna of the ABVP said that “IsupportABVP” was trending all day on Twitter on Sunday. He added that the clash was being portrayed as one sided, but that was not the case.
Meanwhile, Kawalpreet Kaur of the All India Students' Union said: “Will the ABVP, the BJP and the RSS set the limits to free speech or decide what should be said and what not? Even when the organisers cancelled the invitation to Umar Khalid hours before the event, why did the ABVP vandalize it? It clearly shows that the ABVP just has to create an atmosphere and crush the voices of common students which raise the issues of tribals and people of India”.
