Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses will be off the capital's streets on Monday with the public transporter's drivers seeking more compensation for their colleague who was slain in a road rage incident on Sunday.
Ashok Kumar, 42, had been mercilessly beaten to death by a biker after an accidental collision at west Delhi's Mundka precisely 24 hours ago.
"There should be more compensation — at least Rs. 1 crore — that the driver's family should get. We will not resume services till then and also demand more safety for DTC employees on duty," said KC Malik of the Delhi Parivahan Nigam Mazdoor Sangh. The incident took place at 9.40 a.m. at the Mundka-Rohtak Road.
The bus conductor, on whose statement a case of murder has been registered, told the police that the motorcyclist suddenly changed his lane which led to the two-wheeler being hit by the bus from behind.
The motorcyclist’s mother who was riding pillion fell off the two-wheeler. This angered the motorcyclist and he allegedly flung his helmet at the windshield of the bus, shattering it in the process.
There are more than 5,000 buses in DTC fleet. About 1,100 of these buses are deployed to ferry school children in morning and in afternoon. Parents' complained that even school buses remained off-duty. We got an SMS in the morning from the school to arrange pick and drop of our wards since DTC buses were on strike. The school also re-scheduled the weekly cycle test," said a parent whose daughter studies at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road.
