A woman’s driving practice proved fatal for a 40-year-old man in West Delhi’s Rajouri Garden as he came under the wheels of her car and was dragged a few feet before the car came to a halt.

The 27-year-old woman, who was learning to drive from her husband, allegedly mowed down the man when she lost control of the vehicle on Wednesday evening.

The couple rushed the victim to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, but fled as his condition deteriorated.

The case was solved with the help of closed circuit television cameras installed in the market where the incident occurred.

The accused Manisha Grover was arrested from her home in Subhash Nagar. She, however, was later released on bail.

The CCTV footage shows the victim, whose torso was under the Wagon R car, being dragged for a few feet before the vehicle hit a parked Santro car. The husband of the accused then picked him up and took him to the hospital in the same car.

“The incident occurred on Wednesday around 6:45 p.m. We got information from the hospital that an unidentified person, who was injured in an accident, has been brought to the hospital by some unknown persons. When a police team reached the spot, the victim was identified as Parmod Kumar, a resident of Hari Nagar. No eyewitness could be found on the spot,” a senior police officer said.

A case under Sections 279 and 337 (rash driving and endangering others’ safety) of the Indian Penal Code was registered. Meanwhile, during the course of treatment, the victim succumbed to his injuries, and section 304 A of the IPC was added in the case.

“We started with analysing the CCTV footage of DDU Hospital to find out who brought the person and it revealed that the victim was brought there by a couple in a silver colour Wagon R car,” said the officer. On enquiring with relatives of the deceased, the police got to know that he was working in Tagore Garden and used to go to his office daily via Milap Market, 2 Block, Arya Samaj Chowk, Green MIG.

“The CCTV footage of the route was analysed and we found that the incident was captured in the CCTVs installed at 2 Block outside a handloom shop and it revealed that a woman was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident,” he said.

“After gathering more information about the vehicle and the driver, we finally traced the accused, Manisha Grover.”

On interrogation, the accused said that she was learning driving and lost control and the accident occurred.

She, with the help of her husband, took the victim to the hospital. However, seeing the condition of the victim they got scared and fled.
