A day after a 32-year-old woman and her one-year-old son were stabbed to death in north-west Delhi, the woman’s 31-year-old husband was arrested on Wednesday morning.

Shobha and her son were found dead at their residence in Jahangirpuri’s G-Block on Tuesday morning. The police suspected that Om Prakash, Sobha’s husband, had stabbed the two when they were sleeping. The couple’s two other sons, aged 7 and 5 years, were sleeping in the same room but they weren’t harmed.

Om Prakash, a painter, was apprehended from Khera Kalan railway station near Narela, the police said. “He wasn’t carrying a phone so technical surveillance wasn’t possible. We had deployed informers at several railway stations in and around Delhi and had also sent teams to places where he was likely to be hiding,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Aslam Khan.

The informers were deployed especially at lesser-known railway stations. When Om Prakash reached Khera Kalan, the informers alerted the police who reached the spot and nabbed him , said Ms. Khan.

During interrogation, the accused told the police that he had been planning to kill his wife for four months as he suspected her of infidelity and their marriage wasn’t working. The couple had been married for 13 years.

“A week ago, he stole a dagger from a house where he was painting the walls and was looking for an opportunity to kill Shobha. On Tuesday night, when they were all sleeping, he killed the two,” the DCP said.

On why he killed his one-year-old son, the police said the accused maintained that he doubted his wife’s character.
