Don't bow to Sheila's pressure tactics: Mayor

November 07, 2011 12:12 pm | Updated 12:12 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi has urged the Union Home Ministry to proceed with caution and not “bow to the pressure tactics” of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on the issue of trifurcation of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi “as the issue dealt with the provision of civic services to 1.67 crore citizens”.

Dr. Abbi alleged Ms. Dikshi was putting pressure on the Ministry for trifurcation clearance, while the Ministry wished to “go into each detail, legally and technically”.

Prof. Abbi said the Ministry should take its time in studying the issue and its feasibility, especially whether this would be in the interest of citizens and would help provide civic services.

“It should not entail a huge additional financial burden nor add to the multiplicity of authority. The demarcation of boundaries should not hamper the uniform development of the city. Such issue certainly need time to be studied in detail, the pros and cons. and its impact on the services as well as on the citizens.” The Mayor also said that 50 per cent reservation for women can be implemented in the upcoming polls within the current MCD structure.
