Doctor’s body handed over to family after post-mortem

Viscera samples sent to laboratory for test; kin didn’t raise any suspicion, say cops

The body of Sharath Prabhu, a postgraduate medical student from Tamil Nadu, was handed over to his family members after the post-mortem conducted by a medical board at AIIMS on Thursday.

The body was embalmed and placed in a special casket for being flown back to Coimbatore, from where it will be taken to Tirupur district. His last rites will be performed on Friday morning.

“A medical board consisting a panel of doctors was formed to conduct the post-mortem. The board will submit its report within a week. The doctors preserved the viscera, stomach, samples of skin and blood for further examination. Viscera and blood sample will be sent to the forensic science laboratory for test and based on the report the cause of death will be ascertained,” said a senior police officer.

“We are waiting for the report of the medical board for further action. We are in contact with the family members. The family has not raised suspicion on anyone,” said Nupur Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shahdara.

The Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, O. Panneerselvam, extended his sympathies to the family members of the deceased and expressed a deep sense of sorrow and grief.

No suspicion

Sakthi Perumal, former secretary of Delhi Tamil Sangam, who was present at the mortuary said the family has not raised any suspicion on anyone. It has been found that the boy was in depression since he has come to the city. “He wanted to study in a college in south India but he got admission in Delhi. He was not liking the city because of pollution and too much crowd. He had also discussed about work pressure with one of his friends,” said Mr. Perumal.

Sharath had completed his MBBS from Coimbatore Medical College and joined the MD course at at University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi, after clearing the National Eligibility and Entrance Test last year. He died in his rented accommodation in Dilshad Garden on Wednesday morning. His flatmates, Arvind and Karthikeyan, who are also studying at UCMS, found Sharath lying unconscious in the washroom around 6.30 a.m. A syringe was found next to his body, the police said.
