Around 100 contract workers of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Thursday staged a protest outside the Ghaziabad residence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, demanding permanent employment.
“Around 10,000 persons are presently working with the DMRC on a contractual basis. Labour laws are being violated by the private company,” said Naveen, a member of the Delhi Metro Rail Kamgar Union.
Another union member, Ajay said Mr. Kejriwal and members of other parties had promised to end the system of contractual employment but none of them have kept their word. Workers demanded immediate termination of contractual labour, provisions of the services of Employees State Insurance Corporation and provident fund. A DMRC representative said: “The DMRC doesn’t have a workers’ union. The protesters, perhaps, were workers on contract but they are not the direct employees of the DMRC. We have no idea why they protested, we don’t know them and hence, we cannot comment on the issue.”
