DIAL, IndiGo given ‘one last opportunity’ to settle issues

High Court asks them to resolve terminal shifting matter amicably by today

The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the IGI airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and IndiGo airlines to sit and resolve the issues relating to shifting of some of its flights from Terminal 1 to newly opened Terminal 2.

A Bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Rekha Palli gave “one last opportunity” to the parties to settle the issues by Friday.

If the talks fail, the Bench said it will begin adjudicating the case.

The Bench observed that the inconvenience, which would be caused to the public, was troubling it, and hence wanted to give them one last chance to resolve the problems amicably.

Growing numbers

The High Court’s direction came while hearing IndiGo’s appeal against a single judge’s December 20 last year order upholding the decision of the DIAL to partially shift its operations from T-1 to T-2.

DIAL had asked three airlines — IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir — operating from T1 to shift one-third of their flights to T2 to enable it to expand the terminal to meet growing passenger numbers.

This decision was challenged by IndiGo.

‘Will cause confusion’

DIAL had said T1 has already exceeded its capacity and if the airline operations are not shifted partially, it would lead to overcrowding of the airport.

IndiGo, India’s biggest airline by market share, had contended before the court that shifting partially from T1 to T2 would result in confusion and cause inconvenience to passengers.

IndiGo had said, that due to the decision, its operation will be spread over three terminals as it operates international flights from Terminal 3.
