Demand to declare public holiday on Chhath Puja

November 10, 2010 07:45 pm | Updated 07:45 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Delhi BJP has demanded that the State Government declare a public holiday on Chhath Puja which the party said was observed “with much gusto” by over 50 lakh people in Delhi hailing from Bihar, Jharkhand and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

State BJP president Vijender Gupta made this demand at a meeting organised at the party office here on Tuesday. He said at least a restricted holiday should be provided if a public holiday was not possible.

Mr. Gupta announced that the party had set up over two dozen camps at various Chhath Ghats across Delhi and demanded that the Government make sufficient security, power, water and transport arrangements for devotees at the ghats.

The BJP also sent a list of demands regarding Chhath Puja to the Delhi Government. The demands include sufficient number of special trains to run from Delhi to Bihar, arrangements for worship at the MCD and the DDA parks, release of additional water at Wazirabad Ghats, cleaning of Yamuna banks, free parking arrangements, sufficient number of toilets for men and women and tents at Yamuna banks for women to change clothes.

He said that BJP volunteers have started cleaning the ghats and they would perform 24-hour kar seva on November 12 and 13.
