Delhi University on Thursday suspended Professor G.N. Saibaba from his teaching post at Ram Lal Anand College, days after he was picked up and arrested by the Maharashtra police for alleged Maoist links.
“The governing body of the college had a meeting in the morning and decided to suspend him. There is a rule that a person who is in police or judicial custody for some time can be suspended. The university then approved the decision,” said Joint Dean and university spokesperson Malay Neerav.
Reacting, Delhi University Teachers’ Association president Nandita Narain said that although the teachers stood by Dr. Saibaba and would appeal against his suspension, there was nothing illegal about the action. However, Dr. Narain said, once bail was granted, DUTA would appeal for his reappointment.
PUCL condemnationThe People’s Union for Civil Liberties has strongly condemned the alleged use of force by the Maharashtra police while arresting Dr. Saibaba.
