Delhi Urban Development Minister A. K. Walia on Tuesday reviewed construction work on 17 rail under-bridges across the Capital at a high-level meeting and announced that 16 of these bridges are expected to be ready by June 2010. The Sultanpuri RUB has been delayed by at least five months, he added.

During the meeting, which was also attended by senior officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Urban Development Department, Dr. Walia directed that efforts be made to commission all these projects at the earliest.

The Minister said with the commissioning of 16 RUBs the waiting time for vehicles at these railway crossings would be reduced to zero and this would result in saving of both time and fuel. Besides, these projects would also have a positive impact on the overall vehicular movement in the city, he added.

The meeting was informed that the Railways and the MCD had together started execution of work at 11 railway crossings and permission from the traffic police was awaited for re-circulation of traffic. It was also mentioned that there were a few minor problems in respect of finalisation of land acquisition which was being taken up at highest level to facilitate execution of work at all sites.

The construction of all the 17 RUBs would cost Rs.480 crore and this amount would be shared equally by the Railways and the MCD.
