A day after a five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a peon at an East Delhi school, the Delhi government on Sunday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

According to the Delhi police, the girl, a Class I student at the private school in Gandhi Nagar, was allegedly raped on Saturday afternoon. After she went home with bloodstains on her clothes, her mother asked what had happened and she described an “uncle” who had touched her. Based on that, the police arrested Vikas, who works as a peon at the school.

Safety protocol soon

On Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that the incident was “shameful” and that a magisterial inquiry had been set up. Mr. Kejriwal also said that a “safety protocol” would be developed for all schools.

Law Minister Kailash Gahlot said that the inquiry, to be conducted by the sub-divisional magistrate of Vivek Vihar, would be completed in three days.

Referring to the Chief Minister’s statement, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal said developing protocols for schools was a “very crucial step” towards ensuring children’s safety. She added that there should be strict action against the schools that violate the protocol.

This incident comes in the wake of the murder of a seven-year-old boy in a school in neighbouring Gurugram on September 8.
