A senior Delhi Police officer, Amit Singh, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon following an argument with his wife on Monday night.
The wife of the Assistant Commissioner of Police is also critical after she purportedly jumped from the fourth floor of their apartment. She has sustained multiple fractures and is admitted to a private hospital.
The incident took place around 10 p.m. at Lotus Boulevard in Sector 100.
Singh’s seniors in the force said that the couple had marital troubles. "His behaviour in office was cordial and if at all anything was wrong at home, it did not reflect in his work or conduct at the office. Even on Monday when he left office around 6: 30 p.m. nobody had a clue that he might take such a drastic step," said a colleague.
Singh was a DANIPS (Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli Police Service) officer of the 2010 batch.
Around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, a joint team of Delhi and Noida Police officers, including Special Cell Joint Commissioner Vivek Gogia and Additional DCP Manishi Chandra, visited the crime scene and inspected it.
He was assaulted at Lodhi Road last year when he tried to intervene in a fight between two groups. He was attacked with rods and helmets.
Singh is survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter.
