The Capital’s BJP-led municipal corporations have been asked by their party’s State leadership to come up with a uniform proposal on parking rates.
Senior officials of the civic bodies met Delhi unit president Satish Upadhyay on Saturday to discuss a possible increase of parking rates across the city.
Mr. Upadhyay was the chairperson of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee till September 18. In his last meeting as chairperson, the Standing Committee passed a hike in parking rates.
If cleared by the House, rates in South Delhi could increase from Rs. 10 for the first 10 hours to Rs.20 per hour.
The North and East corporations have also been asked to consider the same. Mr. Upadhyay said: “I have asked the officials of the three corporations to sit together and decide on common parking rates.”
The North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee chairperson, Mohan Bhardwaj, said the civic body would propose a hike in rates as well.
“We have to look at the situation on the ground and not political reasons. So we will have to increase the rates so the revenue due to us actually comes to us and not to the parking mafia,” said Mr. Bhardwaj.
The East Delhi civic body is also considering changes to the parking rates.
s“We are yet to decide on the hike, but we will discuss the matter,” said B.B. Tyagi, East Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee chairperson.
