Tunnelling work between Mandi House and the upcoming ITO station of the Delhi Metro railway will begin soon with a tunnel boring machine having been lowered at the Mandi House construction site on Thursday. The machine will be assembled beneath the ground before work begins on the 700-metre-long tunnel. Both Mandi House and ITO stations fall on the 9.37-km Central Secretariat–Kashmere Gate corridor that will be integrated with the existing Line-6 (Central Secretariat–Badarpur).
The corridor between Central Secretariat and Mandi House will serve as an interchange station for passengers from Noida and Anand Vihar to come to Central Secretariat without having to go to Rajiv Chowk. The extension from Mandi House to Kashmere Gate will also connect several areas such as Darya Ganj, Delhi Gate and Red Fort with the business hub at Janpath.
This fully underground line will have seven stations, all constructed using tunnel boring machines. In July, the TBM that was lowered at Chelmsford Club shaft earlier this year emerged at Janpath metro station site after making a 909.3 metres long tunnel.
