The Delhi Jal Board on Friday announced that it had recently started selling treated effluent at filling points in six of its waste water treatment plants.
The waste water can be used for non-potable purposes like horticulture, irrigation and construction. “We wanted to reduce the pressure on drinking water supply as we can’t produce more water. The Jal Board is the only utility in the country that recycles 40 per cent for its treated effluent,” said DJB spokesperson Sanjam Chima.
The greywater is available at the DJB’s major treatment plants at at Rs.7 per kilolitre. It is suited for non-potable use as the bio-chemical oxygen demand is less than 20 parts per million (ppm) and total suspended solids is below 30 ppm.
