Even as the standoff between the Aam Aadmi Party-led (AAP) Delhi Government and the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) continued, the former imposed the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against agitating employees belonging to the public transporter.

Transport Minister Gopal Rai said those refusing to return to work despite the imposition of the said act would be dealt with severely. "If they still don't come back, they will be removed from duty," said Mr. Rai.

The agitating DTC employees have demanded a compensation of Rs. 1 crore for the of kin of Ashok Kumar, the DTC driver who was murdered at the conclusion of a road rage incident here over the weekend.

The Delhi Government had termed the strike illegal on Monday and alleged that the strike was politically motivated even as it pointed fingers at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for stoking discontent among DTC employees.
