The Delhi government is exploring the possibility of having concrete roads in the national capital as they are more durable and cost effective in comparison to bitumen ones.
Noting that the resistance of bitumen surfaces and their strength deteriorate after every spell of rain, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday said Delhi needs “concrete roads as they are more durable.
“India is beginning to realise the potential of concrete roads and we in Delhi also need to explore this option of having concrete roads,” she told a seminar on concrete roads organised by the CII.
At present, Delhi has around 27,000 km of road length which includes national highways and other city roads.
Ms. Dikshit said her government, however, does not favour concrete roads for busy stretches as it may create problem for agencies like DJB and power department to lay cables and water pipes but she would welcome having concrete roads in various colonies.
