Delhi government asks Centre to ban Uber, Ola, Taxi For Sure apps

A ban was imposed on taxi operators providing their services through web-based apps by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after a rape of a private executive last year.

A ban was imposed on taxi operators providing their services through web-based apps by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after a rape of a private executive last year.

The Delhi Government Transport Department, on Wednesday, requested the Department of Electronic and Information Technology (DEITY) to block the web-based apps of three major taxi operators.

Transport Secretary and Commissioner Gitanjali Gupta filed a complaint against Uber, Ola and Taxi For Sure alleging that they were still using their apps and providing service despite the ban.

The said ban was imposed on taxi operators providing their services through web-based apps by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after a rape of a private executive last year.

"...some of these companies like Ola Cabs, Uber and Taxi For Sure are not complying with the ban orders and continue to book their passengers through their apps," Ms. Sharma stated in the complaint which has been accessed by The Hindu.

This, the Commissioner said, was the state of affairs despite both the Transport Department and the Delhi Police taking action against vehicles being run by the said operators despite the ban on the Capital's streets.

"A number of complaints are being received in the Transport Department that operation of such taxi services in an unauthorised manner is putting the safety and security of passengers at risk. A PIL has recently been filed at the Delhi High Court in this matter," the communication adds.

Therefore, the Commissioner said, the Department had decided to "get the apps of such Taxi services blocked."

This was in addition to the Department, on Tuesday, demanded that Uber and Ola Cabs file sworn affidavits declaring that they were complying with the conditions of the MHA's ban.
