Delhi Food Minister Asim Ahmed Khan sacked on charges of corruption

Mr. Khan has been accused of 'cutting deal with local builder' over ownership of slum land.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, on Friday, expelled Food and Civil Supplies Minister Asim Ahmed Khan from the cabinet on corruption charges.

Announcing the decision at the Delhi Secretariat, Mr. Kejriwal said he had decided to expel Mr. Khan and would refer the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further investigation.

Ballimaran MLA Imran Hussain will replace Mr. Khan, it has been decided. Mr. Khan is accused of 'cutting a deal worth Rs. 6 lakh' with a local builder'.

Mr. Kejriwal is understood to have taken action against Mr. Khan, who also had the environment portfolio, on the basis of a series of audio clips brought to his attention on Thursday.

"We want to send a strong message across the country; corruption, of any degree, will not be tolerated," Mr. Kejriwal said.

A government source said the decision was taken within 24 hours of the Chief Minister having received a complaint to this effect from a complainant.
